Northern New Mexico Horsemen's Association

Horses are our passion. Without them we would maybe have a lot of time and money to do something else, but most of us have already made the choice...love 'em and can't leave 'em. And there is one thing we have found out along the way...you can't do it all by yourself.

NNMHA Mission Statement
The purpose of NNMHA is to promote better horse husbandry, knowledge of training and other aspects associated with any form of horse competition, including but not limited to:
  • Encouraging educational programs that foster the study of horsemanship
  • Promoting pleasure riding
  • Conducting or contributing to clinics in horsemanship, as well as the many different forms of horse competition
  • Distributing information pertaining to riding and understanding the horse to members, riders, instructors and friends
  • Maintaining proper records in connection with the sport for the benefit of the members and offering awards for achievement to participants and members.

Upcoming Guest Speakers
February 24th – Dr. Doug Thal: “Parasite control revisited” After 40 years of aggressive and often indiscriminate worming, we are learning that there are some disturbing trends in parasite resistance to our commonly used equine dewormers. What this means is that horse people and veterinarians need to rethink how they are deworming horses. Dr. Thal will present some new ideas on parasites and deworming and describe the approach he suggests based on recent papers and presentations.

March 31 – Shantel Sexton: local trainer/competitor will present: “Building Partnership with Horses” a presentation exploring the elements involved in creating a long-term, healthy and harmonious relationship with your horse. Tips on how to support confidence, cooperation and willingness for every ride.

April 28th – Doug Lanham: “The Spanish Mustang Foundation” is comprised of individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds who, together, provide a broad array of experience, leadership and expertise in protecting the Spanish Mustang. What joins these people by a common thread is their commitment and enthusiasm to protect and preserve this exceptional horse. Mr. Lanham began his involvement with the Spanish Mustangs in the late 1990’s and has been an active supporter of the Brislawn Family and Spanish Mustang Registry. He is currently a board member of the Horse Shelter and the Espanola Valley Humane Society.

May 26th
Susan Smith: “Ortho-Bionomy for Equines” Registered Ortho-Bionomy practitioner Susan Smith has adapted Ortho-Bionomy bodywork principles to suit a being who stands on four legs most of the time, lowers its head to the ground to eat, and whose structure is designed for speed, agility and performance. Susan will do a demo on 2-3 horses to show how Equine Ortho-Bionomy can address such issues as structural imbalance, lameness, trauma, chronic and acute injuries, joint pain and stiffness and behavioral issues. She will select those horses from the NNMHA membership. Email her a description of your horse and its “ailment” and you might get some free body work! A perk of membership! susith@aol.com Meeting to be held on the grounds of NNMHA.

History of NNMHA
Over 60 years ago a group of horse lovers got together to form an association now known as Northern New Mexico Horsemen's Association. Thanks to the vision and dedicated hard work by a core group of really terrific folks, the facility off Rodeo Road in Santa Fe is available for a wide range of Association activities. Every year the Association members have put on shows, led trail rides, given out scholarships, held clinics and play days.

There are about as many ways to participate in NNMHA as you might imagine. By volunteering 2-3 days a year at the Association activities (and/or taking part in them) you get to make new friends, learn something new that will help you with your horse, get to show off your pride and joy in the show arena, and even...ride off into the sunset on one of our sponsored trail rides.

Everyone is welcome at NNMHA meetings or activities, member or not. It's a great group to be part of.
