President’s Message
Looking at the most recent storm out my back window causes me to wonder if spring is truly here! I want to remind everyone that the first event is Clean Up day April 21 at the grounds at 9:00 AM. We do not have a lot to do but need some workers. We will provide pizza for lunch. Also we have a booth, along with Back Country Horsemen, at the Horse Council Horse Fair. If you want to spend some time on May 5 or 6 come down. This year it is free admission. Parking is only $6.00. Karen and I will be at the booth both days but would like to have some help. The clinicians are Richard Shrake, Bob Blackwell, Randall Davis, Katrin Silva. You can watch "A Touch Of Ear," an eight mule blonde Belgian hitch. The venders on "Mane Street Market are always worth visiting. See you all there!

On May 19 Karen and I will provide the Free Back Country Stock Use and Trail Riding Clinic. We have had a lot of people suggest that we hold an open session to talk about all the things people want to know or learn about using their horses on trails in the back country and taking part in group riding. I think we will hit almost everything that people have asked about including safety on the trail, how to participate in a group ride, caring for your horse while in the back country. Feed, nutrition, watering, etc. I will share with those interested in hobbling how they might train their horse to hobble. I also will expose the group to some of the history of the "Packing Craft" which may tickle your interest.

As everyone knows we have been working to get the "Right To Ride" legislation passed. Because we all stand to benefit from such legislation we all need to have some basic understanding of the packing craft. I plan a special spin off on packing. Now, if you have ever been with your horse and encountered pack Llamas on the trail you know that the horse seems to view the Llama as being "from outer space." Karen will have some Llamas at the grounds at a safe location away from the activities. She will set up a safe and controlled situation so you can bring your horse by and desensitize your horse to Llamas. We know this works and it generally only takes one viewing of a Llama for a horse to remember it and thus a safer horse on the trail.

The final part of the day I will introduce you to the Horse Puzzles we will have set up on the grounds. The set of obstacles is intended for the participant to walk their horse through the obstacles using different combinations of lead lines, voice commands. After the introduction everyone is welcome to try the course and welcome to return to the grounds at any time to practice. I feel very strongly that this kind of activity with your horse will go a long way in developing a "safe," competent," trail horse and the two of you will realize "reciprocal" confidence. So, you can bring your horse or you can come and observe then come back at on your own and work the course. As long as I have been working with stock on the trail this is one of the best things I have found to engage both myself and my horse and it becomes fun for both of us. I was amazed at how fast my horses picked up on it a how it has translated to our trail riding. Bottom line - come and have some fun and hopefully experience something that you can take home and use.

Thanks Eldon

Meeting Minutes
March 28: approximately 30+ members present

President Eldon Reyer opened the meeting with announcements:
Mule Extreme Cowboy Trail Day is 4/15 at 10am. $15 includes lunch. Obstacles course. Contact Bob Larson for further info at boblarsen5@aol.com or @ 466-9616 All are welcome and encouraged to attend this event at the NNMHA arena

April 21 is our Arena Clean Up Day. Bring your hammers at 9am, pizza is provided. Let’s have some fun, clean up our arena and meet some new friends

May 5-6 is the Horse Fair at Expo NM in Albuquerque. Eldon will man a booth for BCH and NNMHA. The event is free except for parking. Richard Shrake and other big names will be there! Go to www.nmhorsefair.com

May 19 is the Catch All Clinic; the morning will be the Backcountry Horse obstacles, packing safety, feeding in the backcountry. Noon is the llama desensitization, and the afternoon is intro to trail obstacles/puzzles on three different levels. Not to be missed, this event is FREE!!

August 18 is the Caja Endurance Ride

Right to Ride legislation is still pending in DC, and not through Congress yet! National Forest Trails might be lost. Multi use trails are easier to close than maintain.

Nathan Cote is our State Representative who introduced a memorial to complete the Continental Divide Trail by 2008. He wants the Appalachian Trail opened up to horses.

Eldon has been appointed to the Recreational Trail Program Advisement Board; this is the first time that an equestrian representative is on this committee. Will review grants and trails.

Speaker: Cristina Iannucci, SF Rodeo Jr. Princess 2006/07 with vet tech Fiona Miller gave her science project poster presentation entitled “Sand colic”. It was great with lots of questions.
