President’s Message
The Horse Puzzles are up and ready for you to test your "RECIPROCAL CONFIDENCE" with your horse. I worked out some fun games and there is room for more. The June Rodeo is just around the corner and we will need some help renting the stalls. Come to the next meeting and sign up for a few hours help at the grounds. Remember we can make a couple thousand which pays the bills for the year. The grounds use is picking up. We have had the Queens tryouts, will have the 4-H Rodeo Club working out in the arena on Tuesdays. We are making progress on some rides for the "Ridge Riders." The Horse Fair went well and I handed out about 60 folders for the Club and a lot of membership applications. There are a lot of people outside of the Santa Fe area that wished they could attend our meetings but it is so far for them. We have a good reputation and we should be proud of that. Time to get out on the trails. Check your cinches and let's trail.

Guest Speaker
Our guest speaker was the long-awaited John Massengill from Pojoaque Valley Equipment. He gave an enlightening talk on general trailer maintenance and tips for buying a used trailer. Some of his suggestions follow:
• check the floorboards beneath the mats for rot
• make sure the bearings are packed but not overpacked
• a bent axle can wear out your tires in a very short time
• when trailering one horse in a straight-load trailer (or the heavier of two horses), load him on the driver side since roads slope downward toward the shoulder; keep the weight toward the center of the road
• shavings on the floor cut down road heat in addition to soaking up manure and urine and preserving the floorboards
• keep certain tools with you on the road – lug wrench, jiffy jack, spare tire, spare bearings (I suggest a membership in US Rider, the only roadside assistance plan that covers horse trailers in addition to tow vehicles – www.usrider.org)

Of course the most meaningful tip to me was how to back a trailer: Using your rearview mirrors (not sticking your head out the window) put your hand at 6 o’clock on the steering wheel and turn it in the direction you want the trailer to go – if you want to back left, you would turn your hand (and the wheel) toward 7 o’clock; to back right, you would turn your hand (and the wheel) toward 5 o’clock. I’m repeating this for my own benefit because I still can’t get it straight in my mind. And if this tip really works, then hearing John’s talk was totally worth the wait for me.
