President’s Message
Rodeo de Santa Fe is here and I hope you all are signed up to help rent the stalls! As you know the show committee has been hard at work lining up the three shows and things are coming together. We need help at the office and the gates so come on out and enjoy the shows.

For all you long-time members and new members I thought I would share a bit of personal information. It is not every day that one reaches a 50th milestone in life but on June 10 while presenting the “Handling Stock In The Backcountry” clinic I realized it was 50 years ago June 10, 1957 that I started my National Park Service career as a mule packer – fire guard in Yellowstone National Park. As a young kid just out of the Navy and the Korean War, I had made it through my first year of college. I reported to Yellowstone and was assigned as the “swamper” (helper) for the Parks Mule Packer, John Card. Thus started my first seasonal job which lead to five more seasons before I became a permanent Park Ranger and spent 35 years assigned to 13 park positions during my career. I just saw Karen looking at me with daggers! Better bring her into the picture. I met her in Yellowstone, the daughter of the Park Superintendent, and we married in December 1959. Now with that taken care of, I was given eight mules and John had seven. We spent four and a half months in the backcountry of Yellowstone. John was one of those people that truly influenced my career. I not only learned to be a packer, I grew up that first summer under his guidance. I want to share: “Remembering Packer John Card”.

“Remembering Packer John Card"
It was up on the Yellowstone
The first time that we met.
I was just a young Fire Guard
But I still remember yet.

He asked if I could wrangle.
I says, "I've cinched my share,
You just tell me where you want' em
And I'll try to have 'em there."

He kinda smiled as he looked me over
And I was scared he'd call my bluff,
Then on the spot he shock my hand,
Said, "I need a swampier, sure enough.

Well, I worked that summer on the back trails,
And on into the fall,
My days spent learning the packer's craft
And riding mighty tall.

I made all the mistakes a young hand makes,
And was the cause of a laugh or two,
But John said I was doing just fine,
And might make a packer when summers through.

Well, I left that fall, and over the years
I jerked my share of lash ropes,
And along the way honed my skills enough
That I became more than I could hope.

Well, John died that next spring and it broke my heart
To know that he was gone,
But I'll bet he's packing yet
Out there in that great beyond.

Why, I'll bet Johns head packer
Where his mules are branded BY N BY,
Cause that ol' man had the heart of a packer,
You could see it in his eyes.

I worked the Yellowstone three or four times,
As the seasons were passing on,
I began to notice over the years
That my best days were finally gone.

Then the memories start to weigh on me,
Like the packs I loaded on those ol' mules,
Tears well in my eyes and start to roll down the cheeks
Of this damned sentimental old fool.

"Thank You John."

Thanks for letting me share my remembrance of my friend John Card.

  • Our NNMHA scholarship was presented to Chase Massengill from Poquaque, son of John Massengill, our trailer speaker in May. Chase is the High School Tie Down National Champion.

  • Eldon’s Packing Clinic on 5/19 was an incredible success, thanks Eldon. It was Eldon’s 50th anniversary from working with the National Park Service and his stories were enjoyed by all.

  • The well has been fixed!! Prairie dogs were the culprit. They also chewed up the wiring on the crow’s nest.

  • June 16 – Ridge Riders ride at the Caja, led by Deirdre Monroe.

  • June 20 – Starts the Rodeo de Santa Fe. WE NEED STALL RENTAL VOLUNTEERS! This is a huge ($3000) money maker for us, and means that we won’t have to sell cookies. Here’s the process for stall rentals: Rodeo contestants enter via the East Entrance. They fill out a carbon form which is their receipt. They’ll get a stall card and will put it onto their windshield. We mark that the stall is rented on the master sheet (130 stalls). When again available, we need to clear & lock stalls for re-rental. Stalls need to be cleaned out. There are three shifts: 8:00, 12:00, and 4:00. Four hours each, or whatever you are able. PLEASE volunteer, it’s FUN! Call Sandy Benson 424-7592 to sign up.

  • July 21-22 – Cow Working Clinic at our arena with clinician Blue Allen. Contact Sandy.

Guest Speaker
An informative presentation was put on by equine dentist Phil Ratliff, accompanied by Barbara Truex, DVM, out of Tuscon, AZ. He explained how problems with the teeth and TMJ can cause stiffness all over, resistance in either direction, not to mention eating and digestive problems. If a horse has pain or discomfort on the right side of his face, he will bend easily to the right because it doesn’t hurt, but when asked to bend to the left, pressure is put on the right side of his face and he resists. If this pain persists, he will attempt to compensate and discomfort can extend to his right shoulder; then his diagonal left hind, and before long, he’s in need of a chiropractor on account of his mouth. Several members in attendance had appointments earlier in the day. You can contact Phil at The Rite Bite LLC, 520-490-8383 (cell) or 520-625-7067 (office). Keep trying, he’s hard to get a hold of.
