President’s Message
How about that Horse Show! For those of us that have seen many shows at the NNMHA arena I can tell you this one was off the scale! When we start running out of parking space for horse trailers and cars you know we are drawing a crowd. Many of the classes had 12 or more entries. The team that has come together to put the show schedule together deserves a “WELL DONE.” Susan Stanke and her team “dotted all the T’s and crossed all the I’s or should that be dotted all the I’s and crossed all the T’s.” They covered all the bases in planning and organization. The show started on time and we finished before dark. Volunteers covered all the jobs and tasks and even some of the usual glitches were handled. A big thanks to Susan and her team! July 8 Open Show

I personally want to thank the team that came together to handle the Rodeo stall rentals. We handled it on a day by day basis and it was great having the critical hours covered. Sandy got the volunteers signed up and even those that had not signed up filled in when the pressure was on. As some of you know I was scheduled to leave for Yellowstone and a family reunion on Saturday. I felt so good about the crew handling the rentals that I got away an hour early! Karen and I drove away from home with a U-Haul trailer loaded with food and cooking equipment on schedule. Yes we had a great time with some 28 family members meeting us at a cottage motel in Gardiner. We played “Park Visitor” with the group car caravaning around the park. For Karen and I it was a time for remembering. Like driving down from Swan Lake Flat to the Mammoth Hot Springs terraces and as we passed a small parking overlook Karen and I looked at each other with a smile on our faces and I think I saw a twinkle in her eye. It was in June 1958 that two young kids parked at that parking area late one night to watch the moonlight over the terraces. Now I know there is a name for that group of terraces but Karen and I gave it our own name that night. We just call it “First Kiss Terrace.” And so it went. I saw trailheads where Packer John Card and I headed out pack strings up the trail. I saw the Pitchstone Plateau where I made my first jump on a fire as a smoke jumper. The highlight of the trip was delivering Karen’s fathers personal papers (17 file cases) to the new archives where we were treated to a personal tour. Her father had been Superintendent when we met and the archive staff had placed on display some of his writing and even his uniform jacket. This brought some closure for us.

Ridge Riders saddle up! We are on our way for a great season. Matt has stepped up to the plate to be trail master for the rides. We will be offering some great rides and ask everyone to let Matt know if you have a ride you would like to include. Also we want to make the rides as safe and enjoyable as possible. Mat and I will be offering some trail tips for group riding. To start things off I would offer a tip that I consider critical to safe group riding. Horsemanship 101. “This is a bridle and rein used to control your horse from the saddle.” “This is a halter and lead rope used to control your horse from the ground.” When group riding it is necessary to combine both saddle and ground control. For that reason we request that all riders have a halter and lead rope for those lunch stops or when nature calls. A horse tied off with reins is a loose horse. There is a potential for accidents when a horse gets loose and runs through a group of tied horses. Come out for the Dixon Apple Orchard ride for more Horsemanship 101. Call Matt 603-6477.

  • Susan Stanke is doing a tremendous job this year with our upcoming shows…great sponsors are in place and ribbons have arrived. Please come out to volunteer for all three of the shows.

  • Member suggestion: place a listing of vets, farriers, ER people, etc. in the trailer for emergencies.

  • Trish Hug will be re-designing the graphics for the show flyers.

  • $500 Scholarship awarded to Chase Massengill, a graduating senior from Pojoaque, NM. Chase is the 2007 HS Rodeo National Tie Down Champion and 2008 HS Rodeo State Team Roping Champion. Guest Speaker
Dynamite Dave Copher was our most entertaining and interesting speaker tonight. He has twenty five years experience in the arena as a Barrelman and Bullfighter. After fifteen years of fighting bulls he has turned his attention to full time comedy. Dave is a member of the PRCA. He brings laughter to a rodeo three-fold, with improvisational comedy, comedy acts, and poetry from the rodeo clown’s point of view – giving us all a look at what it can be like to be a rodeo clown with both the danger and the comedy. Dave’s improvisational style of comedy in the barrel has kept spectators laughing with new non-scripted humor at each and every performance. His acts are creative in nature and he is always trying to come up with new and different ways to entertain the crowd. Dave has entertained fans across the nation at rodeos and cowboy poetry gatherings. He has taken these elements and put them to rhyme. They make you think and at the same time, tickle your funny bone. Thanks Dave!
