July Speaker
Our guest speaker was Karyn Ogonowski from the Enchantment Driving Society in Albuquerque. Karen started driving four years ago. We learned that in carriage driving there is less control over the horse because you only have the reins, so in order to safely participate, you need a safe animal, meaning he is calm, doesn’t spook, is trusting, and listens well. Gender doesn’t matter. The horse has to stop immediately on command; he also needs to get used to the noise the cart makes behind him. Driving is better and safer with two people.
In driving trials, dressage is timed, cones/balls is timed, and there is also a hazards course.
When competing, there is lots of travel. Startup costs are about $500 for a safe harness, meaning it is new, supple, and can be leather or biothane. A cart is approximately $750; it should have a wooden shaft because it needs to break away should anything bad happen. No extra handling equipment is needed – the buggy can be loaded in back of a pickup truck, then the horse trailer towed behind.
