President’s Message
State Fair is in full swing. Karen and I will be at the Horse Booth on Wednesday, the 12th with a horse and burro. If you get down, stop in and visit. We will be handing out material on membership and the show in October. Do sign up for the Ridge Riders ride and the Play Day BBQ. Promises to be great food and fun!!! There will be games on horseback so bring your horse. Even if you do not enter all the games it is a good opportunity to let your horse be around other horses. Karen and I are putting the games together but we also need helpers who are not entering the games. Just come and enjoy the day and help make it a great time for all. See you on the ride on the 15th and at the Play Day on the the 23rd.

Eldon

Meeting Minutes
The meeting was called to order at 7:15pm by Eldon Reyer. Fourteen members and two guests were in attendance.

  • September 23rd is our annual Play Day and BBQ at the arena on Rodeo Road. Play Day starts at 2:30pm and is free (or small donation). Have a great time with some friendly competition on horseback. Eldon and Karen have some terrific games in mind. Everyone – members and non-members welcome. Games are followed by a tasty BBQ catered this year by Leon Harms. Chicken, brisket, corn bread, salad, peach cobbler, beans…what more could you ask for? BBQ starts around 4:30. $10 per person. Don't wait till the last minute to rsvp…wouldn’t want to turn anyone away from the feast. You can pay at the BBQ but you must rsvp asap! Call or email Sandy with rsvp – 424-7592 or sandybenson@earthlink.net
  • We will plan a discussion of kids and safety helmets. English riders already wear helmets; we would like to have Western riders (below age 18?) wear helmets. Will check with our insurance company. We will also consider having kids wear helmets on our Play Day.
  • The Horsemen’s Voice would like to increase its readership and is giving away 30 free subscriptions to kids. We will pass out these subscriptions at our next show.
  • Eldon brought up Horse Evacuation Preparedness after a fire on his own property, caused by a lightning strike.

Show Report
The August 19th Open Show was a great success. There were fewer people, but lots of kids – 24 participants overall. Thanks to all our volunteers. We made $1300 and signed up four new members. Check out the show results and photos at August 19 Open Show.

We’d also like to thank our generous sponsors: Corral West, Dan’s Boots and Saddles, Desert Wind Saddlery, Clint Mortenson’s Saddlery and The Feed Bin on West Alameda. Please be sure to thank them for their donations when you next visit their stores.

Announcements
  • Board Meetings are open to the general membership and are the second Wednesday of the month at the Plaza Southside Cafe. The next meeting is on September 12th at 6:30.
  • There will be no September general meeting – instead – Play Day on September 23.
  • Congratulations to Ellie Powell for making the Finals at the AQHA Youth World. Way to go!

Guest Speaker
Our speaker was Felisa Smith, Assistant Professor at UNM, Department of Biology. She gave a most interesting PowerPoint presentation on Equine Evolution, beginning with the Eohippus (Dawn Horse) about the size of a tiny dog (8" tall). Horses belong to the family of odd-toed ungulants, including tapirs and, of all things, the rhinoceros. (I thought the hippo would be a relative but it belongs to the even-toed ungulants.) She passed around a 30 million-year-old jawbone – about an inch in total length – with tiny teeth, and a 3" fossilized horse tooth. Our equine companions have come a long way.

Calendar of Events
Monthly meetings are held the last Wednesday of the month (excluding September and December) at the Plaza South Side Café, 3011 Cerrillos Rd. at 7 p.m. Speaker begins at 7:30 p.m. Good idea to get there by 6:30 if having dinner. For more info contact Eldon or Sandy.

September 23 – Annual play day and BBQ…all members and their friends are invited. We’ll start the day at 2:30pm with a series of horseback games designed by Eldon and Karen. Last year we couldn’t have had more fun. At 4:30 or so we’ll start munching down on some home cooked brisket and chicken provided by Leon Harms. Tickets for the dinner will be available at the show. $10 adults $5 kids (16 and under). Reservations may be made by contacting Sandy at sandybenson@earthlink.net. 424-7592. September 30 – Sangre de Cristo Horsemen’s Assn Open Show in Taos. Contact Janet Elder JLFishie@aol.com

October 26-28 – Rocky Mountain Ranch Horse Versatility Clinics and Competition, San Cristobal Ranch. Andy Adams with other local clinicians. Call Deb Benenson 660-5227 for info

Would anybody be interested in taking part in a microchipping clinic? If there is enough interest, we would organize a session at our grounds and the Livestock Board and Vet will come and inject a grain-of-rice-sized microchip in the horse’s neck beneath the mane, and take photos for new/replacement hauling papers. If you already have hauling papers, the price is only $5.00 per horse; if you don’t have them, the cost is $35.00 per horse for the microchip and hauling papers. This is a great way to prove ownership of your equine should it get lost or stolen. Contact Trish Hug at trishhug@aol.com to sign up. The number of interested parties will determine if we have a session.
