President’s Message
The play day had almost everything. Good friends, new friends, fun games, rain, and GREAT FOOD! The horse shows will see a winding down for our season but do not forget that we need a slate of officers and board members ready for the December Christmas partly. Come to the October meeting and give us your ideas for where we need to go next year and who you would like to see as officers. I sure welcome everyone’s participation. See you October 31.

Eldon

Meeting Minutes
No meeting was held in September. Instead we held our annual Play Day on the 23rd. The games were pretty much rained out but the barbecue chicken, brisket, baked potatoes, beans, salad and peach cobbler were worth coming for.

Show Report
The October 7th Open Show was a fitting end to our show season. Thanks to all our volunteers. Check out the show results and photos on our Horse Show Photos page; click on October 7 Open Show.

We’d like to, again, thank our generous sponsors: Corral West, Dan’s Boots and Saddles, Desert Wind Saddlery, Clint Mortenson’s Saddlery and The Feed Bin on West Alameda. Please be sure to thank them for their donations when you next visit their stores.

Announcements

Calendar of Events
Monthly meetings are held the last Wednesday of the month (excluding September and December) at the Plaza South Side Café, 3011 Cerrillos Rd. at 7 p.m. Speaker begins at 7:30 p.m. Good idea to get there by 6:30 if having dinner. For more info contact Eldon or Sandy.

October 13 – The next Ridge Riders ride will be to Aspen Vista in Santa Fe. We will meet at the grounds at 9 AM and drive together. Contact Matt with questions – 424-0148 or guenthmn@yahoo.com

October 31 – General Meeting Guest Speaker: Christina Savitsky on Buckaroo Balance on and off the Trail

November 28 – General Meeting Guest Speaker: Robert Holt, local farrier "In His Shoes: Hoof Care Show and Tell” – a slide show presentation tracking the care given to Robert’s clients – horses of all different types and disciplines around Santa Fe. For over 23 years Robert Holt has been fascinated with horses’ hooves. His work has led him to make startling discoveries about healing injuries, treating disease and keeping horses sound. Having done extensive research on equine locomotion, natural balance shoeing and a willingness to use cutting edge technology, Robert is a welcome sight every six weeks or so for both horse and rider. Lecture/slide presentation starts at 7:30. Horse-lovers welcome to join us at 6:30 for dinner. Email nnmha@earthlink.net or call 505-424-7592.

Other Equine Activities
Be sure to check out our Other Show Dates webpage for other fun events to attend.

October 18-27 – Arabian Nationals at Expo New Mexico in Albuquerque. This event ranks as the most prestigious North American championship in the Arabian show horse industry. Amateur and professional riders or handlers compete in halter, native costume, reining, working cow, cutting, trail, show hack, sidesaddle, park horse, driving and English, western and hunter classes. 2007 is the last time the Nationals are held in New Mexico, so don’t miss it.

October 26-28 – Rocky Mountain Ranch Horse Versatility Clinics and Competition, San Cristobal Ranch. Andy Adams with other local clinicians. Call Deb Benenson 660-5227 for info

Would anybody be interested in taking part in a microchipping clinic? If there is enough interest, we would organize a session at our grounds and the Livestock Board and Vet will come and inject a grain-of-rice-sized microchip in the horse’s neck beneath the mane, and take photos for new/replacement hauling papers. If you already have hauling papers, the price is only $5.00 per horse; if you don’t have them, the cost is $35.00 per horse for the microchip and hauling papers. This is a great way to prove ownership of your equine should it get lost or stolen. Contact Trish Hug at trishhug@aol.com to sign up. The number of interested parties will determine if we have a session.
